The Izzet is a MTG Salvation guild clan, i.e. it is one based on a guild from the Ravnica block. Sometimes called the "Izzet League", members are usually interested in the the colors red and blue, the red/blue combination, the flavor of the Izzet guild from the Guildpact expansion, or the notion of chaotic science.

[edit] Background

The Izzet is a clan for newer members to feel comfortable joining. The Izzet strive to create a welcoming atmosphere where anything can be discussed, Magic-related or otherwise. The Izzet were created before the release of Guildpact, in expectation of the set coming out. Since Ravnica Block has come and gone, there has been a shift in the Clan. The Clan is no longer as focused on the cards/sets that the Izzet were featured in, but there has been no lack of fans of the colors Red and Blue or the ideas the Izzet embody.

[edit] Mascot

The guild's (un-)official mascot is Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind; the hyper-intelligent dragon that leads the Izzet League. Niv-Mizzet has never been officially established as the mascot of the Clan, but this is likely because it is implied that he holds a place of honour as the personification of piercing intelligence and destructive capriciousness.

[edit] Organization

[edit] Hierarchy

In the Izzet, there is a hierarchy of titles. The various positions in the guild are Leader, Co-Leader, Clan Rep, High Mage, Acolyte, and Apprentice, with the last three being unique to the Izzet. The Clan Leader was originally given the title of Elder Mage, a practice no longer used.[1] Also, High Mages were once referred to by enumeration, i.e. "First Magi(sic) of the Council, High Mage of Lavamancy."[2] The ordering of the positions of 'High Mage, Acolyte, Apprentice' is referred to as the 'High Mage System.' The newest members of the Izzet are admitted as Apprentices under a High Mage. After a position opens, that Apprentice will be promoted to an Acolyte under the same High Mage. In each of these cases, the Apprentice and the Acolyte are considered to be 'studying' in the field of the High Mage under whom they subserve, and use the High Mage's field in their title. E.g. The title of the Apprentice under the High Mage of Arcane Babblings is the 'Apprentice of Arcane Babblings.'

[edit] Promotion

There have been various numbers of High Mages in the past, as the number is determined by the number of Acolytes and Apprentices that join the Clan. Though the six founding members were all High Mages to start with, there have been more or less in the past. There are two ways for advancement to occur: Members leaving (through inactivity or voluntarily); or through new members joining. Since no High Mage may have more than one Apprentice and one Acolyte at any given time, when each High Mage has no remaining slots open and a new member wishes to join, an Apprentice is promoted to Acolyte and an Acolyte is promoted to High Mage. In theory, these promotions all take place for the Apprentice and Acolyte of the High Mage that the new member is joining under. However, in practice, adjustments and shuffling occurs to grant promotions based on merit (it's just easier that way).

[edit] Benefits

Despite the hierarchy of the Clan, the voice of each member is respected, though some preference is given to seniority, position, and good posting habits. The benefits and duties of High Mages are only loosely defined, though one is expected to be a regularly contributing poster as a High Mage, and is likewise respected as such. Another benefit of becoming a High Mage is the ability to determine one's own field of expertise or to choose one from the list of fields established by High Mages past.

[edit] The Triple Alliance

The Izzet allied with the House Dimir clan and the Cult of Rakdos to form a solid Image:Manau.gifImage:Manab.gifImage:Manar.gif lock. For a certain time, Clan Contest votes were often exchanged mutually between these guilds; but, since the moderators frowned upon this activity, the alliance was mostly in name only. However there is still a strong sense of rapport amongst the members of the Triple Alliance. In 2008, the Rakdos died out (this is sometimes accredited to the Izzet's "Touch of Death"), leaving a vacancy in the Triple Alliance. Several months later, Clan Mono-Black filled the void to return the Triple Alliance to its former glory (it is significant to mention that until the falling out of the Rakdos, Clan Mono-Black was an honourary member of the Triple Alliance).
