Card impact is a term used in many areas of magic and which has several meanings depending on its context. The most relevant contexts are metagame and play. The "slang" word for a card with huge impact on the game is a "bomb". Anything with a card impact too high for the good of the game is called "broken". A card which impacts on the game by being able to kill an opponent is called a finisher.

[edit] Definitions of card impact
[edit] Discussions about metagame
A card's impact on the metagame is the card's frequency and relevance to the threat/answer structure of a format. Impact on a metagame is a variable understood with extensive testing in that metagame.
[edit] Discussions about play
Card impact is the effect a card has when it is played. In multiplayer, a card with high impact is known as a gorilla, due to the animal breakdowns of Anthony Alongi.
[edit] Creature impact
Creature impact is usually tied directly to the creature's clock. For the creatures with the highest impact some positive ability is sometimes present.
[edit] Rarity
Rarity has a positive correlation with card impact, i.e., a rare is more likely to have high impact. The importance of rarity for card impact is largely for limited formats where access to a bomb is defining. This correlation can be contrasted with the negative relationship between rarity and card frequency, due to small card pools in limited and to expense in constructed.
[edit] Related topics
Card impact is only one measurement of a card. Casting cost, Answer flexibility, and Threat durability are also measurements of a card that are important to their competitive prowess.
