Theme decks, constructed by Wizards of the Coast, are a type of Magic product that have been sold as a part of each expansion since Tempest. In Shards of Alara, they were called intro packs.

[edit] Structure

A preconstructed theme deck is a deck made from a card pool of the current legal edition and cards from the current block as well.

Theme decks from expansions, like a Starter-level deck, contain two rares and 13 uncommons (older theme decks from the Tempest block contained three rares and 12 uncommons), but the amount of lands and common cards are different because it is an actual deck design, with a total of 60 cards. Theme decks from core sets contain two rares and five uncommons with a total of 40 cards.

Intro packs consist of 41 cards, one of which is a foil rare and 1 booster pack.

[edit] Core Sets

Core Sets have had theme decks since 7th Edition and have had one for each color. Theme decks from core sets are only made with cards from that core set, while theme decks from expansion sets have cards from that set's block. Every core set theme deck has two rares.

[edit] Expansion sets

Theme decks from expansion sets may contain any card printed in that specific block as of that expansion set. For example, the Critical Mass preconstructed deck from Saviors of Kamigawa, contains seven cards from the other sets in the Kamigawa block.

[edit] Time Spiral block

[edit] Ice Age block

Coldsnap is part of the Ice Age block. Unlike the other block sets, Alliances and Ice Age, it does have preconstructed theme decks thus the block has four theme decks.

[edit] Ravnica block

Each of the Ravnica block sets have theme decks that concentrate on the individual guilds in that set. Since the block was built around the 10 guilds of Ravnica, the set has 10 theme decks instead of the standard 12 per block.

[edit] Onslaught block

Onslaught theme decks introduced a new design on their cardboard box that quickly showed the colors used to build the deck. Although Legions is a creature-only set, only one theme deck has only creatures in it (besides lands) — Elvish Rage. The other decks have other card types from Onslaught.

[edit] Odyssey block

[edit] Invasion block

Invasion was the first expansion set to have a five-color theme deck; Spectrum.

[edit] Urza block

Urza's Saga was the first expansion set to have a three-color theme deck. Radiant's Revenge is the only theme deck with both rares being artifacts.

[edit] Tempest block

Theme decks from this block contained 3 rares each. After this block, theme decks contained two rares each.

[edit] Mirage block (MTGO only)

The Mirage block theme decks were designed for MTGO, as these expansion sets were printed before theme decks were first printed in the Tempest block.

[edit] Starter Level Sets

Portal did not contain theme decks, but Portal Second Age and Portal Three Kingdoms contained five and three decks respectively. Each of these theme decks contained three rares. Starter 1999 contained five theme decks, each with two rares.

[edit] Duel Decks
