Planeswalkers were among the most powerful beings in the multiverse, and are the thematic identities of the players of the game. Planeswalkers can be born at random in any sentient race, with no outward signs of their latent power. However, there is an incredibly remote chance that any given sentient, natural being will be born with a planeswalker's spark. When that being is put through a period of extreme stress — in many cases, death — the spark can trigger, causing the individual to ascend and become a planeswalker.

Dominaria (archaic: Dominia Prime, the Wheel) is a plane whose name means "Song of Dominia". Dominaria is also the Nexus of the Multiverse, being the focal point in Dominia with strong influence on other planes. It is the setting for the majority of Magic storylines. All early sets except for Arabian Nights, and Homelands take place there; the Weatherlight Saga dealt with a devastating invasion of this world. After Scourge, storylines have been traveling to a different plane each block, though Dominaria has been revisited in Time Spiral.

Magic: The Gathering Online (Magic Online, MTGO, or MODO) is the official means of playing Magic: The Gathering over the Internet. Wizards of the Coast launched it in 2002 with the release of Invasion and has since added each new set to its server as well. This causes Magic Online to have slightly different formats than paper Magic.

Phyrexia is an artificial plane of entirely mechanical "life" created by an ancient planeswalker. Little is known of this planewalker, aside from the fact that he preferred to assume the form of a dragon. This world was not so different from Mirrodin until Yawgmoth arrived, brought there by the planeswalker Dyfed. Yawgmoth, with the remnants and descendants of the phthisis-inflicted Thran humans whom he "saved" through the process he referred to as "Phyresis" (essentially the replacement of weak mortality with artifice) came here when they were forced out of the Thran Empire as traitors. The ensuing war destroyed the nation of the Thran.
