Shards of Alara is the first set in the Alara block. The prerelease events for this set were held on September 27-28, 2008. Release events were held on October 3, 2008, the same day the set went on sale. Shards of Alara introduced a new rarity level called mythic rare. The set as a whole has multicolored cards as an overarching theme, due to the setting being split into five "shards" with no contact with each other, each shard was given its own distinct mechanical theme. These themes include; the shard of Bant was given the "exalted" ability, the shard of Esper was given an emphasis on artifacts (and colored artifacts), the shard of Grixis was given the "unearth" ability, the shard of Jund was given the "devour" ability, and the shard of Naya was given an emphasis on creatures with power of 5 or greater ("5-power matters"). Shards also featured the return of cycling for the third time (or fourth, including Future Sight) since the Urza block.

Conflux is the second set in the Alara block. The prerelease events for this set were held January 31-February 1, 2009. Launch parties were held February 6-8, 2009.

In Conflux, Domain became an ability word, also introduced basic land cycling for which there is a cycle of common cards (also regular cycling appears on two cards).

All the shard keywords are back. Colored artifact creatures are still here. Naya's "power 5 or greater" theme continues. In many ways, Conflux is a big continuation of Shards of Alara.
A powerful and infinitely sinister force is conspiring to reunite the Shards of Alara. This reunification will come with a deadly price – sheer chaos, as realities begin to overlap. Thus begins the Conflux.

A conflux is defined as "a coming together of people or things".

5-power matters is the theme of the Shards of Alara's Naya shard; the Naya shard has a number of cards that look for creatures with power 5 or greater.

Elves are a race associated with green mana; they are ubiquitous throughout the multiverse, second in prominence throughout the many worlds only to humans. They typically live in forests, and are close to the land. In the game itself, many elves produce additional mana. Most elves look much like humans, only with pointed ears. Some types of elves have very distinctive physical features, however, such as blue or green skin or elongated limbs.
Most elves live far longer than humans, but it's unclear exactly how much. Eladamri was over 150 years old and considered to be in his prime. Ravnican elves not only live far longer than humans but also mature faster; it is unknown if this is common to all elves or just those of Ravnica.
Elves can be found in virtually every plane throughout the multiverse. To date, Kamigawa, Ulgrotha and Mercadia are the only natural planes to have no known races of elves, and only small portions of the three have been seen.
