Lorwyn is the forty-third Magic expansion. It was released on October 12, 2007, as the first set in the Lorwyn block. Tribes and creature types, are a prominent theme of the Lorwyn set and block. With "tribal" cards — the first of which, introduced in Future Sight, is Rebel tribal aura Bound in Silence — spells may also have tribal/creature types, and thus affect cards that take creature types into account. Lorwyn introduced planeswalkers as an entirely new card type into the main game. In terms of flavor, with the nature of planeswalking having recently changed and the players themselves representing planeswalkers, the goal was to make it feel like the controller of the planeswalker had another player helping its controller. Yawgmoth, known as The Ineffable by his servants and The Lord of the Wastes throughout Dominarian mythology, was the medical genius of the Thran Empire who was outcast for his highly controversial solutions to medical ailments. Upon discovering the artificial plane of Phyrexia, Yawgmoth felt an increasing desire to utilize this mechanical plane to his own ends. Morningtide is the forty-fourth Magic expansion. It was released on February 1, 2008, as the second and final set in the Lorwyn block. Morningtide expands upon Lorwyn's flavor and theme by shifting the tribal focus away from the eight races of Lorwyn (kithkin, merfolk, faeries, elementals, goblins, giants, treefolk, and elves) to the five classes of Morningtide (soldiers, shamans, wizards, warriors, and rogues). The new mechanics introduced in Morningtide are Prowl, Kinship, and Reinforce. Prowl and Kinship are class-specific keywords for Rogues and Shamans, respectively, and Reinforce appears on multiple non class-related cards. (read more)

10th Edition, or Tenth Edition, the current core set, was released July 13, 2007. For the first time, Wizards of the Coast put legendary creatures in a core set, each color received two legendary creatures, and a legendary artifact, Legacy Weapon, was included. This is the second time (after Alpha/Beta) using black borders in a core set for non-premium cards. This is also the first time since 5th Edition that the core set has not been 350 cards. The creature types of many cards in the Tenth Edition set have been updated to sync them up with the current Magic conventions. The most notable change is that the cycle of manlands and Chimeric Staff now have creature types when animated. Also the Lord creature type has been eliminated. (read more)
