Mythic rare is a new rarity level, higher than rare, that was introduced in the Alara block. A mythic rare card will appear in place of a rare in 1 out of every 8 packs. They are considered twice as rare as rare cards. Some mythic rares are tournament staples, such as Rafiq of the Many and Jenara, Asura of War, while others are branded as "kitchen table cards", like Conflux.
So far, 15 mythic rare cards appeared in Shards of Alara and Zendikar, and 10 have appeared in both Conflux and Alara Reborn sets, suggesting a pattern of 15 per large set and 10 per small. In Magic 2010 there are also 15 mythic rares.
Also, in the more recent duel decks, the "flagship" cards have both appeared as mythic rares: Jace Beleren vs. Chandra Nalaar, Lord of the Pit vs. Akroma, Angel of Wrath, and Garruk Wildspeaker vs. Liliana Vess. From The Vault: Exiled is composed of all mythic rares, and Premium Deck Series: Slivers has a single Mythic Rare of Sliver Overlord.
