Memnarch was a sentient version of the Mirari driven mad by a mysterious oil.[1] As steward of Argentum while its creator, Karn, was away, Memnarch wished to become a planeswalker like the golem that created it. To that end, he transformed Argentum into Mirrodin, a planet-sized machine able to transfer a planeswalker's spark from one being into another.
His attempts to find a planeswalker spark led him to populate Mirrodin with beings from other planes, and wait for a spark owner. When he identified Glissa Sunseeker's spark, he became obsessed with capturing her and stealing it for himself. Even though he succeeded in extracting the spark, he couldn't take it for himself, and it was transfered to Slobad.
Memnarch was then deactivated by Glissa. Karn then destroyed his body and recovered the Mirari, which is guarded in Argentum by Glissa, Slobad and Geth.

- ↑ According to Will McDermott (source), the original idea was that it was Phyrexian oil (not to be confused with glistening oil), which was the final (though unfinished) weapon of Yawgmoth, destined for the invasion on Dominaria.
