MTGNews was, for some time, the leader in Magic rumours. Mainly due to rancored_elf, there was a time when anyone that wanted to have a sneak preview of an upcoming Magic: The Gathering set would go to this site. It was also home of one of the biggest online communities in the history of the game.

In the end of 2004, all that changed; there were internal problems and the site lost credibility due to some users. This was around the time MTG Salvation was created, and the fact that rancored_elf moved to MTG Salvation meant that a lot of the users soon followed in a mass transit. MTG Salvation became the leading site in rumours.

In more recent times activity has dropped to all-time lows with many notable members either being banned or leaving, but has been rebounding since the beginning of 2008. It currently holds a tight-knit group of active users and is slowly gaining new members, many of whom are originally from MTG Salvation. Also recently many long time members have been returning with varying degrees of activity.

The MTGNews since the Subterranean Spirit fiasco and his subsequent leaving has prided itself more on its accepting and family-like community atmosphere, rather than the place for Magic and Magic rumours, which the site was original known for. This can be seen in that most of the heaviest-posted forums are non-Magic related.
