Grand Prix
From MTG Salvation Wiki
A Grand Prix, frequently abbreviated "GP", is a type of DCI-sanctioned Magic: The Gathering tournament. Grand Prix events are open to all players with no need to qualify for the event, unlike a Pro Tour event. As a result, these tournaments have the largest turnouts of any Magic tournaments.
Grand Prix events are split over 2 days, with the Top 64 or Top 128 players (depending on the tournament's size) advancing to Day 2 and a final single elimination Top 8 taking place at the end of Day 2. Grand Prix events are typically have a K-value of 40 and are run at Rules Enforcement level 4.
Byes can be earned for Grand Prix tournaments in several ways:
- Rating
- Pro Players Club levels
- winning a Grand Prix Trial that feeds the Grand Prix
[edit] Prizes
Currently, finishing in the Top 64 of a Grand Prix will give you at least one Pro Point. As of September 2006, earning Pro Points at a Grand Prix no longer causes you to lose your Amateur Status.
Currently, for individual Grand Prix events, first place at a Grand Prix wins $3,000. The combined money prizes for the Top 64 is $25,000. An additional $5,000 in prize money is split between the Top 10 Amateur players.
The Top 16 finishers at an individual Grand Prix qualify for the Pro Tour it feeds.
