Extended
From MTG Salvation Wiki
Extended is a rotating format that includes all editions from Mirrodin forward.
Constructed decks must contain a minimum of sixty cards. There is no maximum deck size; however, you must be able to shuffle your deck with no assistance. If a player wishes to use a sideboard, it must contain exactly fifteen cards.
With the exception of basic land cards (and Relentless Rats), a player's combined deck and sideboard may not contain more than four copies of any individual card, counted by its English card title equivalent.[1]
It was previously also known as Type 1.X.

[edit] Rotation
On March 1, 2008 the extended rotation policy has changed to "Extended is the last seven years of Magic blocks and core sets", thus greatly simplifying card legality duration prediction.[2]
Before this, rotations would happen every three years taking with it the three oldest blocks in the format and all Core sets in between.
Previous rotations:
- October 2, 2009: Zendikar became legal, Onslaught block and 8th Edition left the format.
- October 3, 2008: Shards of Alara became legal, Invasion block, Odyssey block and 7th Edition left the format.
- October 20, 2005: Ravnica: City of Guilds became legal, Tempest block, Urza block, Masques block and 6th Edition left the format.
- October 20, 2002: Onslaught became legal, Ice Age, Alliances, Homelands, Mirage block, and 5th Edition left the format as well as Dual lands.
- October 1, 1999: The Dark, Fallen Empires, Revised and 4th Edition left the format. However, an exception for Dual lands was established which would keep them legal in the format.[3]
