"Mad Genius" Erik Lauer is a former Magic: The Gathering player and notable deck designer. He is now a member of Magic R&D. Mark Rosewater asked Paul Sottosanti to put Erik on the design team for Morningtide.

Mike Flores has called him "possibly the most significant deck designer in the history of the game."^{[citation needed]}
