The Core Sets are base sets of cards with which some tournaments revolve around. Cards from expansion sets rotate in and out of these base set of cards. The most recent editions contain 383 cards. The core set is intended to teach new players the game without cards that can be confusing. Abilities that need explaining, like Protection, have reminder text in the more recent core sets.

No official storyline is used in core sets. A card's flavor text may be from any other expansion.
Some cards may have a storyline text in italics, but there is no storyline throughout a core set linking the cards together, except in Seventh Edition in which they narrated the events of a war featuring paladins.
