The BLAME clan on MTG Salvation is an exemption in the Clans forum, for it is composed entirely out of Dutch speaking members and all talk is restricted to the Dutch language. The clan has a long history both on MTGNews and on MTG Salvation and has always remained a weird duck in the Clan forum.

[edit] History

[edit] Formation

The origins of BLAME can be found at MTGNews. In the spring of 2002 Llanowar Dude started the first thread Who's to BLAME, although he had been trying to get a Dutch speaking clan of the ground since 2001. His first two efforts, both under the name Flying DutchClan, were unsuccessful and those clan threads died after a few weeks.

The first Flying DutchClan main thread already had many of the qualities of the later BLAME threads, although it seems that the members were not yet confident enough to post entirely in Dutch.

The second The FlyingDutchClan attempt proved to be a lot more successful and many of the later high profile BLAME members were a part of this clan. But the Flying DutchClan members were not completely happy with the chosen name and discussion about a new name resulted in the first actual BLAME thread: Who's to BLAME This BLAME thread proved to be a huge success and a lot of Dutch members found their way to the clan.

[edit] MTGNews period

It is almost impossible to give a comprehensive overview of all the members that posted in the BLAME threads over the course of the MTGNews period. Some members just checked a couple of times or only once every few months. Still it is possible to give a fairly correct overview by using the Clan threads.

[edit] "Who's to Blame?"

The first Clan BLAME thread was Who's to BLAME While BLAME was started by Llanowar Dude, other high profile members soon followed in his tracks. MTGNews post count giants like MasterRick and Renmaster joined and Tribal Flame, the Squirle master and Vampirebrat83 soon followed. Over the course of the 1.000 posts long Who's to BLAME thread almost all Dutch speaking members part of MTGNews at that time checked in. At the end of the Who’s to BLAME thread the following members were part of BLAME:

  1. Llanowar Dude [council]
  2. Tijmen of Runes
  3. MasterRick [council]
  4. Josvandoesburg.
  5. Phyrexian Raper
  6. blue wizard
  7. the Squirle master
  8. Darkest Lotus
  9. Macros_the_black
  10. magic_erik

[edit] [Who's to BLAME] The Only One Who Is To Blamed

After a 1.000 posts a second thread was created. During the time The Only One Who Is To Blamed was used, a lot of the members who would become essential to later day BLAME started posting. Moggmaniac, Quilt and Gnork all became members during the The Only One Who Is To Blamed period. The most active members of BLAME for the most part remained the old initiators like MasterRick, Renmaster and Llanowar Dude. Again the thread was abandoned after over a thousand posts. And thus the third thread was started.

[edit] If Something Goes Wrong, [BLAME] The Guy Who Can't Speak English

Around the time of the third clan thread, The Guy Who Can't Speak English the BLAME clan had found a solid group of members who would stay with the clan for years.

  1. Llanowar Dude [council]
  2. MasterRick [council]
  3. Moggmaniac
  4. Quilt
  5. Gnork
  6. Renmaster

It also showed another trend in the BLAME history, a lack of active members. The core of BLAME always stayed the same and few new members stayed long enough. The only new member to join BLAME during this period was RubenThaMaster who would stay with BLAME for a long time.

[edit] To [BLAME] or not to [BLAME]

To BLAME or not to BLAME was the first thread not to be started by the BLAME leader Llanowar Dude. Coincidental the To [BLAME] or not to [BLAME] was proved to be the end of the line for the old generation of BLAME. Quite a lot of new members joined BLAME during this period. The most prominent additions were sneakyhomunculus, Zirilian, GodoftheGrove, Night Elf and Onderzeeboot.

At the same time the older members were becoming less active than before. While Llanowar Dude, MasterRick were the leaders of BLAME in the early days, now the clan was for the most part run by Quilt and Gnork. The mass-exodus to MTGSalvation coincided with this changing of the guard and therefore To BLAME or not to BLAME was a turning point in the history of BLAME.

[edit] MTGSalvation period

[edit] Don't [BLAME] us, we don't speak English.

Don't BLAME us, we don't speak English is the first created on MTGSalvation. With the jump to Salvation, BLAME lost a lot of old members but also gained many new ones. Although the BLAME member list became quite long, the activity was down, and it took almost a year to get to the ritual 1000th post.

[edit] Don't [BLAME] It On The Moonlight

The second MTGSalvation BLAME thread Don't [BLAME It On The Moonlight] marked a new era of activity for the clan. Many new members joined and for the first time in BLAME's history the clan thread actually became spammy and talk even started to involve Magic discussion. Some older members like Quilt and sneakyhomunculus were a bit less active at this time, but now everything seems to be back to normal. Activity still is very high though, compared to the older threads.

[edit] You Can't [BLAME] Gravity For Falling In Love

After a thousand posts a new thread was started. Don't [BLAME It On The Moonlight] is the third BLAME thread since exodus to MTGsalvation. It went by pretty quick for BLAME standards, as a new thread was started after a mere seven months.

[edit] When everything walks in the hundred; own [BLAME], fat hump!

Already the fourth thread since BLAME's inception at mtgsalvation, activity once again decreased to almost a halt during the summer of 2007. The formerly very active member Banaan made his last post in August 2007 and hasn't been seen since, Tiennis has been missing since October. The beginning of 2008 marked the unexpected return of The Squirle Master, unseen since the days of yore, when mtgnews still was the rumor site to go to. Activity picked up once again at a slow but steady pace after that, the most active posters being members sneakyhomonculus and Onderzeeboot, and clan friends Zaphod and Casual Chaos Rules!!.

[edit] Purpose

The meaning of the BLAME abbreviation has been much discussed by non-Dutch speaking members. The abbreviation in fact has almost nothing to do with the clan and its purpose. BLAME stands for:

  • B=Bende van
  • L=Losgeslagen en
  • A=Agressieve
  • M=Meesters der
  • E=Eeuwigheid

Which roughly translates to “Gang of Stampeding and Aggressive Masters of Eternity”. The title, invented by MasterRick, doesn’t give a real explanation of the basis of the BLAME clan. The real purpose of BLAME was to give a home to the many Dutch speaking members from The Netherlands and Flanders that were active on MTGNews at the time.

Right from the start the only criterion for BLAME membership was being a Dutch speaking member. It didn’t matter if you were a active member or not, as long as you spoke Dutch. Throughout the BLAME history many non-Dutch speaking members, as divers as Xenphire and Dragon of the Pant, have tried to get involved in the discussion using online translators, but although the results were often hilarious they also proved futile. To this date, no non-Dutch speaking member has ever been a long lasting member of BLAME.

Because all members of BLAME only communicated in Dutch the Clan always has had a special relationship with the Clan forum moderators. Most Clan moderators did not speak any Dutch, so to help their moderators and to make sure their clan would be allowed, every BLAME thread starter promised to keep an eye out for spammers and flamers. Thus BLAME became the only Clan thread that never was moderated by a Clan moderator. In the later years of BLAME this special situation changed because at MTG Salvation there actually were some Dutch speaking moderators who would be able to mod the thread. However, these moderaters were also members of BLAME, so the "crazy Dutchies", still were seen as a special isolated part of the Clan forum.
